As Electrical Commissioning Engineer you will be responsible for the commissioning, testing, and servicing of Low Voltage (LV) switchgear at customer sites throughout the Ashburn, Virgina region. The role involves working both independently and as part of a team to deliver high-quality, safe, and efficient commissioning and service support to BMC’s customers.
Reporting to the Regional Commissioning Manager this position requires flexibility to travel extensively, sometimes at short notice and during weekends, and to work extended hours when necessary to meet project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
Installation & Commissioning
Carry out commissioning, testing and system validation of LV switchgear panels, Power Distribution Centres (PDCs) in accordance with company standards and client specifications.
Carry out diagnostics, trouble shooting, sequencing and systems integration.
Application of BMC Manufacturing specific methodologies, protocols and internal systems.
Perform pre-commissioning inspections and system functional tests to verify electrical integrity and operational performance.
Fault find and problem solve issues during commissioning, providing clear feedback and solutions to the engineering and project teams.
Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with relevant standards and internal quality and safety procedures.
Documentation & Reporting
Complete all site documentation using the Site Services Management System (SSMS), including commissioning reports, permits, site attendance logs, and inspection records.
Maintain accurate Health & Safety documentation, including risk assessments, method statements, and permit-to-work systems.
Report all quality issues, non-conformances, and faults through the SSMS to ensure continuous improvement.
Attend on-site meetings and whiteboard briefings, communicating effectively with project managers, clients, and other contractors.
Health, Safety & Compliance
Ensure full compliance with on-site Health & Safety regulations and company policies and State/Country of delivery policies and compliances.
Promote a strong safety culture on-site, identifying potential hazards and implementing corrective actions.
Carry out dynamic risk assessments when conditions change or unexpected hazards arise.
Teamwork & Leadership
Work collaboratively with clients, contractors, and internal teams to achieve project goals.
Provide mentoring and support to newly recruited engineers and apprentices.
Demonstrate strong team leadership, professionalism, and a proactive approach to site challenges.
Maintain excellent communication with supervisors and the wider project team regarding progress and issues.
Other Duties
Be willing and available to travel throughout the region occasionally on short notice.
Work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as project schedules require.
Maintain high standards of timekeeping, attendance, and personal presentation.
Requirements
Degree (preferred but not always mandatory):
· BSc in Electrical Engineering (or related field) OR equivalent hands-on industry experience
· 3–5+ years in electrical systems commissioning power distribution systems
· Mission-critical facilities (data centres, industrial plants)
· Journeyman or Master Electrician License (Virginia)
· Valid driver’s license
· OSHA safety certifications
· Knowledge of: NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code)
