Job Description

Electrical Design Engineer

Advanced R&D (DC Distribution Systems)

BMC Manufacturing designs and builds advanced low voltage power distribution systems for some of the world’s largest data centre operators. Our engineering team develops high performance switchgear and power distribution platforms that support the rapidly evolving infrastructure requirements of hyperscale and high-performance computing environments.

At BMC Manufacturing, we offer permanent positions that provide stability and long-term opportunity. We are committed to structured career progression, giving every employee a clear pathway to grow and advance. With competitive rates of pay and a comprehensive benefits package, we ensure our people feel valued, supported, and rewarded for the work they do.

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer with a strong background in power systems, switchgear technologies, and DC distribution. Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering, this role will support the research and development of advanced power distribution technologies, with a particular focus on high voltage DC distribution systems for data centre applications.

The successful candidate will work closely with the engineering team while operating in a research-led capacity, investigating emerging DC architectures, protection technologies, and switching methods that may form the foundation of future BMC power distribution systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and technical development related to high voltage DC distribution systems, particularly in the 380–800V range being adopted by next generation data centre server architectures.

  • Design and optimise DC protection, switching, fault‑management, and energy‑delivery systems.

  • Develop system architectures, schematics, component specifications, and testing protocols.

  • Evaluate new technologies, materials, and components suitable for high‑voltage DC environments.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing teams to ensure product viability and safety.

  • Conduct simulation, modelling, and analysis of electrical performance, thermal behaviour, and failure modes.

  • Support prototype builds, validation testing, and compliance with international electrical standards (IEC, UL, etc.).

  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Power systems/ Electronics, or related field.

  • 5+ years’ experience in electrical distribution, switchgear design, or power electronics.

  • Proven experience working with high‑voltage DC systems, ideally in the 380–1000V range.

  • Strong understanding of DC protection principles, including arc‑interruption, fault detection, and contactor / breaker technologies.

  • Familiarity with IEC/UL regulatory frameworks for electrical distribution equipment.

  • Proficiency with electrical design tools (e.g., AutoCAD Inventor & Electrical, EPLAN, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink).

  • Hands-on experience with prototyping, testing, and power system validation.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience developing equipment for data centres, renewable energy, or industrial DC microgrids.

  • Knowledge of thermal management, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and high‑current busbar design.

  • Understanding of semiconductor switching devices (IGBT, SiC MOSFET, etc.) used in DC power circuits.

  • Strong problem‑solving abilities, creativity, and a passion for innovation.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to shape the next generation of DC distribution technology

  • A collaborative and technically strong engineering environment.

  • Competitive salary, benefits package, and career advancement opportunities.

  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art testing and development facilities.
